United Kingdom FlagWelsh disapointment for Lomax in British Rallycross at Pembrey, Wales

Welsh disapointment for Lomax: click to enlargeLeeds racer Craig Lomax, finally had his first bad weekend in the series. With the aid of a Milltek Sport exhaust systemon his Citroen Saxo race car, Craig has dominated the three previous rounds of the Shannon Group British Rallycross Hot Hatch Championship, the team expected to conquer Wales in the same way.

A spin in Practice wasn’t the best of starts...

Heats 1 and 2 were dominant victories with Craig running away into the Welsh sun, leaving the rest of the field to battle hard. Setting times that would have comfortably qualified him into the MSA Supernational Final. Heat 3 was a battle between Craig and Tomasz Marciniak, and a first corner incident meant Craig was playing catch up the heat, despite driving hard Craig could only finish second.

“I was really enjoying driving the car, I don’t think I’ve ever gone through Honda as fast as I have today, and the engine is just so strong.”

The Final saw Craig get a poor start, leaving a lot of work to do, On Lap 2 Lomax passed local Boy Jeff Hope Davis for the lead, and began pulling away but on lap 4 the car started to develop Gearbox and Clutch issues, which despite trying to nurse the car, meant Craig lost all hope of making it four Victories out of four.

With the Citroen Saxo having had a mid-season engine and gearbox refurb the team were extremely disappointed with the failure.

“The Baxi Avanti Team Extreme Rallycross team worked hard to rebuild the car after early season battles, and the one thing we didn’t get to test was the gearbox before we went to this event, unfortunately this looks to have cost us a good result here, with the clutch exploding and causing damage to the new gearbox. We will just have to work hard in the next 26 days to make sure the car is ready for Lydden Hill. We have already sourced a new clutch from Questmead one of our supporters and the team were bust stripping the gearbox the Monday evening after the event.”

Craig still leads the Championship, by 24 points, meaning even if he has a bad round at Lydden hill in August, he will still be leading the Championship going into the Final Rd at Croft Circuit Darlington
