United Kingdom FlagBattle Resumes at Snetterton for the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup Contenders

VW Racing Cup: Snetterton: click to enlargeThe Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup reaches the mid point of its season this weekend (21/22 June) at Snetterton with the battle for the championship lead finely poised between team-mates James Greenway, Aaron Mason, Josh Caygill and Joe Fulbrook.

Just 24 points separate the leading quartet as the championship heads to the Norfolk circuit, where drivers from the other leading teams, notably JWB Motorsport, KPM Racing, SlideSports and Team HARD, will be hoping to claim their first wins of the season.

Twenty-four-year-old Greenway, new to the VW Cup this year, is keen to get back on to the top step of the podium to follow up his Rockingham win in the White Rose Volkswagen-backed Scirocco. “We weren’t happy with the car last time out, at Silverstone, even though we finished both races and built our championship lead,” said James. “So we will be out testing with the car Thursday and Friday, testing some changes we have made to it since Silverstone and getting the car dialled into the track to make sure that we are back up at the front. Aaron looks quick, Joe looks quick and we will need to be on top form to keep that lead and get those race wins.”

Reigning champion Mason will meanwhile be eager to maintain his record of winning at least one race at each circuit this season and maybe to regain the points lead from his young team-mate. For his part, double champion Fulbrook is more than familiar with winning at Snetterton and, after regaining his form at Silverstone in his Golf GTI to claim his first race win for a year, Joe will be looking for more.

Several Scirocco drivers are knocking on the door of their first wins, not least Josh Caygill, whose consistency has helped him up to championship third, and very rapid JWB Motorsport man Stefan Di Resta, the brother of DTM star Paul. Then there are the three drivers who made a breakthrough at Silverstone to score podium finishes – Jack Walker-Tully in the Cooke and Mason Scirocco, Cambridge-based car-racing newcomer Lucas Orrock, and Orrock’s KPM Racing team-mate Sam Morgan, at 17 the youngest in the field.

After showing great speed at Rockingham in early May, SlideSports Scirocco racer David Sutton suffered a variety of problems last time out. The same goes for Team HARD Golf GTI man Tom Barley, who like Sutton will be keen to regain his earlier form. Just outside the championship top 10 and looking to make further progress are Maximum Motorsport team-mates Stewart Lines and Chris Panayiotou. The latter driver bagged a brace of fourth-place finishes at Silverstone and was unlucky not to score the new team’s maiden podium finish.

Phil House was a winner at Snetterton last year but, like former champion James Walker in the Milltek Sport KPM Golf, he has yet to make the podium in 2014. Others to keep an eye on include SlideSports Scirocco man David Fairbrother and Howard Fuller (Team HARD Golf), both of whom have shown great pace when their machinery has permitted. Wisbech driver Joe McMillan made a promising debut at Silverstone in his Cobra Engineering Scirocco and ought to go well on his home track.

Team HARD will field a newcomer to the championship in the shape of Simon Deaton, who will race the Golf GTI which team patron Tony Gilham drove at Silverstone. Chesterfield-based Deaton has previously raced in the Euro Saloons Championship and in the Time Attack series. “I’ve been thinking about getting involved with the VW Cup for a while,” said Simon, “because it’s a competitive championship where you don’t have to worry too much about huge budgets. At the moment it’s a last-minute deal just for Snetterton but if I like it I will do more…”

A 30-car field is anticipated for Snetterton for rounds seven and eight of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup including Milltek Sport's own James Walker in their Mk6 Golf Racer.
